The Legends of the Rocking Dutchman - episode 272
The Session label
The Session label was a Chicago based company that combined re-issue of mid-twenties hot jazz with new recordings of old-fashioned jazz and some more modern sounding stuff. It also features unique recordings of Alonzo and Jimmy Yancey and Cripple Clarence Lofton, mostly piano solos.
In this show you'll find out all about this label and its owner Phil Featheringill, but also the controverse that was going on between the modern jazz enthousiasts and the moldy figs, as they were called, the traditionalists in jazz, at a time when a renewed interest grew for old-style New Orleans jazz.
