The Legends of the Rocking Dutchman - episode 141
Legends Mix
As usual in my Legends Mix shows, I have an allsorts of Rhythm & Blues and today one of the blues I play, brings the story of the jug bands, poor men's bands that used homemade instruments like the washboard, homemade banjos, bathtub bass, stovepipes and jugs - especially popular around Memphis in the twenties and thirties. But also a the name of a now noted musician who had to adopt a Latin name in order to book a hotel room - for a black man in the forties still a challenge; a favorite of mine that I found out I never played on here; and of course the big names and the obscure - as always.
