The Legends of the Rocking Dutchman - episode 10

Eddie Chamblee

In today's show I feature a pretty unknown but one of the greatest and most versatile saxophonists of the Rhythm & Blues era: Eddie Chamblee. He did great work as a session man and as a leader of his own combo and through the years he developed a very own and distinctive style that can be best described as 'effortlessly cool', that is, no wild honking but a tasteful use of the coolest licks and tricks. Eddie never had big hits except where he, uncredited, did wonderful saxophone work on the Four Blazes' number one hit Mary Jo. He also was married to Dinah Washington for a short while and in this show a small tribute of the great lady of jazz to her husband of that time.
